Chapter 3: Stand Up and Fight

Soundtrack: Track 03 — Stand Up and Fight
PWYW (€0+ / Free)

Mission Briefing: Regrouping in the wreckage of the hangar, Falck unites with Ghost Squad operatives Ace, Terror, and Cipher in Formation Delta to breach deeper into the ship’s classified sectors.

The hangar's emergency lights cast long shadows as Falck checked his tactical display. The schematics of the NHS Manala flickered on his wrist-mounted interface—corridors branching like veins through the massive ship. The command deck lay seven levels up, past security checkpoints that should have been swarming with guards.

Should have been.

"Ghost-Seven to all units," Falck subvocalized into his comm. "We're inside. Proceeding to primary objective."

Static crackled before Cipher's voice cut through, sharp with concern. "Falck! Thank the gods you're alive. I'm tracking your position—coming to you now."

"Negative, Cipher. Maintain overwatch—"

"Already in the hangar. Look up."

A maintenance hatch in the ceiling sparked and fell away. Cipher dropped through, landing in a crouch with practiced ease. His lean frame was wrapped in light tactical armor, various hacking devices strapped to his belt. The young tech specialist's eyes darted across the destruction, processing the scene with machine-like efficiency.

"Saatana," he breathed, taking in Dire Wulf's wreckage. "Your Core—"

"Is gone." Falck's voice carried finality. "We adapt. We move forward."

Terror checked his heavy rifle's charge. "Kid's right to join us. We'll need his skills if the command deck's locked down."

Ace nodded, her hand resting on her sidearm. "Four operators are better than three. Especially when it's this quiet."

That was the problem. The Manala should have been chaos—alarms blaring, security teams mobilizing, automated defenses activating. Instead, only the distant hum of the ship's engines disturbed the silence.

Falck felt that presence in his mind—Dire Wulf's echo—pulse with unease. Something was wrong. Ares was many things, but careless wasn't one of them.

"Formation delta," Falck ordered. "Cipher, you're in the middle. Terror takes point, Ace covers our six. Move."

They advanced through the hangar's blast doors into a main corridor. Their footsteps echoed off polished steel floors. The walls were lined with inactive display panels, their blank surfaces reflecting distorted images of the team.

Terror's massive frame moved with surprising grace, his rifle sweeping each corner. "Where is everyone? Ship this size should have a crew of thousands."

"Skeleton crew maybe?" Cipher suggested, his fingers dancing over a portable scanner. "I'm reading minimal life signs. Most of the ship's automated."

"Or it's a trap," Ace muttered.

They climbed through emergency stairwells and maintenance shafts, avoiding the main lifts. Each level they ascended felt like descending deeper into a predator's lair. The very air seemed to thicken with anticipation.

On deck three, they passed through what looked like a crew quarters section. A meal sat half-finished on a table, steam still rising faintly from a cup of coffee. Playing cards lay scattered as if the game had been interrupted moments ago.

"Where the hell did everyone go?" Terror muttered, disturbed by the scene.

Cipher scanned the area. "No bodies, no signs of struggle. It's like they just… vanished."

They continued upward. On deck four, they reached a major intersection. Three corridors branched off—left toward the primary lift banks, straight ahead to the armory, right into what the schematics labeled as restricted zones. A propaganda screen flickered on the wall, showing Ares' face in a loop—his cold eyes seeming to follow them.

Falck raised his fist, signaling a halt. That presence in his mind—cold fire, digital whispers—pulled him toward the right corridor. It wasn't Dire Wulf exactly, but something using his voice, his patterns.

Turn right.

"Command deck is straight, then left," Ace reminded him, studying her own display. "We're wasting time."

"No." Falck turned right. "This way."

Terror and Ace exchanged glances. "Falck, the mission—"

"Trust me." He was already moving down the corridor. "Something's here. Something important."

Cipher followed without hesitation, his scanner beeping softly. "I'm picking up unusual energy signatures. High-frequency oscillations consistent with—" He paused, frowning. "That can't be right."

"What?" Terror demanded, falling in behind them despite his obvious reluctance.

"Soul Prism signatures. Hundreds of them."

They stopped before a reinforced door marked only with an alphanumeric designation: SP-101. No description, no warnings. Just cold metal and a biometric lock that should have been impossible to bypass.

Falck approached the scanner. That presence in his mind surged, and suddenly he understood. His hand moved without conscious thought, pressing against the reader. Where his palm touched, the metal grew warm.

Vash'tai… The whisper came from within, an echo of the alien language he'd heard in his mind moments before.

The lock disengaged with a soft click.

"How did you—" Ace started.

"I don't know." Falck pulled the door open. "But we're about to find out."

Beyond the threshold lay darkness and the faint, pulsing glow of something that made the presence in Falck's mind recoil and reach out simultaneously. Whatever secrets the Manala held, they were through this door.

"Stack up," Falck ordered, raising his weapon. "We go in fast and clean. Whatever's in there, we handle it together."

Terror grinned, a flash of teeth in the dim light. "Vittu, yes. Finally, some action."

"Or answers," Cipher added, preparing his recording equipment.

Ace moved into position. "On your mark, Commander."

Falck took a breath, feeling the weight of command, the loss of Dire Wulf, and the burning need for answers coalesce into diamond-hard determination. They'd fought their way across Mars, breached a battlecruiser, and lost too much to turn back now.

Time to stand up and fight for the truth.

"Mark."

They burst through the doorway into the unknown.
