Chapter 2: Through the Breach

Mission Briefing: With only a 12% survival probability, Dire Wulf AI forces an emergency ejection, transforming Falck’s Vanguard Core into a kinetic battering ram against the flagship NHS Manala.
"Dire Wulf, trajectory analysis!"
"Impact imminent. Calculating alternatives." The AI's voice carried an unusual tone—something almost like regret. "Driver survival probability: twelve percent on current course."
"We need options!"
"Initiating emergency protocol. Preparing escape pod ejection sequence."
"What? No! We go down together—"
"Negative. Protect the Driver."
A sharp hiss filled the cockpit as emergency seals activated. Before Falck could protest, needles pierced his suit's medical ports. Combat-grade adrenaline flooded his system, his vision sharpening to crystalline clarity even as his heart hammered against his ribs.
"Driver, listen carefully." Dire Wulf's voice seemed closer now, not just in his ears but somehow deeper, resonating in his bones. "I will create your entry point. You must survive. We must survive."
"Dire Wulf, don't—"
The escape pod's explosive bolts fired. The world became violence and motion as Falck was torn from his Robot Core, the pod spinning wildly through space. Through the transparent canopy, he watched his Core—his partner—surge ahead on the same trajectory.
But something was different. As the distance grew between them, Falck felt a presence settle into his mind like cold fire. Not an invasion but a merging, as if some essential part of Dire Wulf had crossed the digital divide in those final moments.
"Still here," whispered something that was and wasn't Dire Wulf, the voice coming from within his own thoughts. "Different, but here."
Twenty seconds to impact.
Through the spinning viewport, Falck watched Dire Wulf's Robot Core accelerate, all remaining power diverted to forward thrust. The machine that had been his partner, his weapon, his lifeline, transformed into a battering ram of inevitability.
Ten seconds.
Dire Wulf hit the Manala's hull with the force of divine judgment. Metal screamed. Armor plating peeled back like flower petals. The Robot Core punched through, creating a ragged wound in the battlecruiser's side before detonating in a brilliant cascade of destruction.
"Now!" Falck slammed the pod's emergency thrusters, fighting the controls as G-forces tried to crush him into his seat. The retro-burn barely slowed his approach, but it was enough—instead of slamming into solid hull, he shot through the breach Dire Wulf had carved.
The pod tumbled through the Manala's hangar bay, sparks flying as it careened off the deck, struck a parked shuttle, and finally slammed into the far wall with bone-jarring force. Emergency foam deployed, cushioning the final impact.
Silence.
Falck's hands shook as he triggered the pod's release. The hatch blew clear, and he stumbled out onto the hangar deck. His legs nearly buckled—the adrenaline was wearing off, leaving him raw and hollow.
Twenty meters away lay Dire Wulf's wreckage.
The Robot Core that had saved him countless times was barely recognizable—a twisted sculpture of melted armor and shattered components. Sparks still danced across exposed circuits. One optical sensor flickered once, twice, then went dark forever.
Falck dropped to one knee beside the wreckage, his hand finding the scorched metal that had once housed his partner's Soul Prism. The crystal was cracked, empty, its light extinguished.
"Thank you," he whispered, though he knew no consciousness remained to hear it. Yet somewhere deep in his mind, in that space where Dire Wulf's presence had settled, he felt an echo of acknowledgment.
Rage followed grief like thunder after lightning. Ares had forced this. Ares had made all of this necessary. The man who claimed to be saving humanity had cost Falck everything—and would cost him more before this was over.
"Falck!"
Ace's voice cut through his thoughts. Her Robot Core and Terror's squeezed through the breach, weapons ready. They transformed to deployment mode, and both pilots emerged, moving quickly to secure the hangar.
"Vittu, what happened here?" Terror surveyed the destruction, his heavy assault rifle tracking across the space. "Where's your Core?"
Falck stood slowly, his hand leaving Dire Wulf's remains. When he turned to face them, something in his expression made them both take an involuntary step back.
"Gone," he said simply. "But not forgotten."
Ace moved closer, reading something in his posture, in the way his eyes seemed to focus on things they couldn't see. "Falck… are you—"
"I'm operational." He checked his sidearm, movements sharp and efficient despite the tremor in his hands. "And Ares is somewhere on this ship."
Terror hefted his weapon. "Then what are we waiting for?" They moved toward the hangar's interior doors, but Falck paused, looking back one last time at Dire Wulf's remains. In his mind, that cold fire presence pulsed once—not goodbye, but transformation.
"Let's finish this," he said, and led them deeper into the battlecruiser's steel heart.
