Mission Briefing: 2036. The night before Comet Apophis impacts Earth. On the windswept hill of Tähtitorninmäki overlooking Neo Helsinki, Peter Ares makes a devastating choice—abandoning Audencia Dura and their unborn child as the sky burns.

[ 2036 — The Night Before Impact ]

The hill of Tähtitorninmäki overlooked Neo Helsinki like a guardian watching over a sleeping child. Audencia Dura stood at the observation point, her hand unconsciously resting on her still-flat stomach where new life grew—a secret she'd carried for six weeks now, waiting for the right moment to tell Peter.

Above, the sky burned with impossible light. Apophis hung like a second sun rising from the west, its cosmic fire painting the heavens in shades of amber and crimson. The comet's tail stretched across half the sky, a river of light that seemed to flow directly toward Earth. Beautiful and terrifying in equal measure.

The city below was eerily quiet. Most people were already in the underground shelters, waiting for impact behind walls of steel and hope. The newly completed dome shield shimmered faintly in the comet's light, a translucent bubble that was supposed to protect them all. Supposed to.

She heard his footsteps before she saw him—measured, military-precise, so different from the man who used to bound up these hills with her during their courtship just two years ago. Peter Ares emerged from the shadows, his Robot Core division uniform immaculate despite the chaos consuming the world.

"Audencia," he said, and something in his tone made her stomach clench with dread.

"Peter." She turned to face him, searching his face for the warmth she'd fallen in love with. She found only cold determination. "You came."

"I said I would." He stood beside her but maintained a careful distance, his gaze fixed on the burning sky. "The impact is estimated in eighteen hours."

"I know." She swallowed hard, gathering courage. *Tell him. Tell him now.* "Peter, I need to—"

"I'm leaving," he said abruptly, cutting through her words like a blade.

The world seemed to tilt. "What?"

He finally looked at her, and his eyes were harder than the reinforced walls of the shelter below. "After impact, everything changes. The restructuring of humanity, the restoration of order from chaos—it will require complete focus. Complete dedication."

"We can face it together," she said, hearing the desperation creeping into her voice. "That's what partners do. That's what we promised—"

"Promises made in a world that's about to end," he interrupted. "Tomorrow, those promises become chains that will hold humanity back from what it needs to become."

"What are you talking about?" She reached for his hand, but he pulled away. "Peter, you're scaring me. We love each other. We can—"

"Love is a luxury we can no longer afford." His words were ice. "The research I've been conducting with the Martian quartz stones… it's changed things. Changed me."

"The quartz?" She knew about his classified research, the strange crystalline formations discovered in the Martian excavations. "What does that have to do with us?"

He turned away, his profile sharp against the burning sky. "The exposure has altered my blood chemistry at a genetic level. The scientists say it's evolution, adaptation. I'm becoming something… different. Something necessary for what's coming."

Her hand moved instinctively to her stomach. If his blood was changed, what did that mean for—

"The world needs leaders who can make the hard choices," Peter continued. "Who can sacrifice everything personal for the greater good. I can't be that if I'm anchored to the past."

"Anchored?" The word broke something inside her. "Is that what I am to you? An anchor?"

"You're a reminder of who I was," he said simply. "I need to become who I must be."

Tears burned her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Not yet. "You're a coward. Hiding behind duty and evolution when you're just afraid—"

"I'm not afraid of anything," he said sharply.

"You're afraid of being human!" she shot back. "Afraid of feeling, of vulnerability, of—"

The distinctive thrum of helicopter blades cut through the night. A sleek military transport descended from the darkness, its lights harsh against the comet's glow. The wind from its rotors whipped her hair across her face.

Peter moved toward it without hesitation. "This is necessary, Audencia. One day, you'll understand."

"Peter, wait!" She grabbed his arm, her last chance. "There's something I need to tell you—"

He gently but firmly removed her hand. "Goodbye, Audencia."

"Peter, please! I'm—"

But he was already walking away, his silhouette disappearing into the helicopter's waiting darkness. The engines roared louder, drowning out everything.

"I'm pregnant!" she screamed, but the words were swallowed by the mechanical thunder. Even if he'd heard, he didn't turn back.

The helicopter lifted off, its lights diminishing as it carried Peter Ares away from her forever. She stood alone on the hill, tears finally falling freely, one hand pressed to her stomach where their child grew—a child whose father had just chosen the future over family.

Above, Apophis blazed brighter, as if feeding on her anguish. A sun rising from the west, heralding the end of one world and the birth of another. She watched it burn across the heavens and felt her own world ending—not from the comet's impact, but from the crater Peter had just carved into her heart.

"Your father doesn't know you exist," she whispered to the life inside her. "Maybe that's for the best."

The city below began to sound its final warning sirens. Eighteen hours until impact. Eighteen hours until everything changed.

But for Audencia Dura, the world had already ended.

She stood on that hill, watching the burning sky, feeling the weight of the secret she carried. The child of evolved blood and desperate love, conceived before the fall, who would grow up in the ashes of the world that was.

In the distance, the lights of Peter's helicopter disappeared into the darkness, igniting shadows that would stretch across decades.
